Comprehensive Guide to TYPO3 Update / Upgrade
Ensuring TYPO3 updates and upgrades is a pivotal responsibility for both TYPO3 agencies and developers.
I'm excited to share my experiences, which will prove invaluable for developers and agencies ranging from beginners to experts in TYPO3, especially for those working with TYPO3 version 12. By the time you finish reading this blog, you'll gain comprehensive insights into executing TYPO3 updates and upgrades effectively, leaving your clients extremely satisfied.
Here's a quick overview of the steps for TYPO3 Update/Upgrade:
Set up your LOCAL server by downloading and transferring everything from LIVE.
Perform TYPO3 core and extension upgrades, conduct QA testing, and fix any bugs.
Ensure compatibility for all TYPO3 extensions, addressing patches, hooks, and new standards. Provide alternative solutions for incompatible extensions.
Upload the updated site to the DEV server (e.g., dev.yourdomain.com).
Seek customer approval after they test the site thoroughly.
Go live by deploying everything from DEV to the LIVE server.
How can you speed up the process of upgrading minor and security updates?
TYPO3 offers a convenient feature allowing you to check and apply minor/security updates directly from the TYPO3 backend. In the 'Important Actions' section of the Install Tool, you can find a function to update the TYPO3 Core. Please note that this feature is compatible with Unix and MacOS systems and requires your TYPO3 project to work with the typo3_src symlink. The document root and one path above it (../) must be writable to create new directories, and the 'tar' command must be available for source package extraction.
